Schwerin: Puschkinstraße becomes the pedestrian zone - that's how everyone benefits!

Puschkinstraße, 19055 Schwerin, Deutschland - Schwerin is facing exciting change! The city administration is planning a comprehensive redesign of Puschkinstraße, which will soon offer pedestrians and cyclists more space. From Friedrichstrasse to the market square, Puschkinstraße is becoming a new hotspot for gastronomy and leisure activities. But what does that mean for traffic in this popular street?

traffic calming in two stages

Currently the Puschkinstraße is a Tempo 30 zone, and the adjacent cathedral road and the cathedral courtyard are shown as traffic-calmed areas. An analysis from 2020 shows that over 90 percent of road users are traveling here on foot or by bike. Nevertheless, the outer gastronomy suffers from existing traffic, since restaurateurs often have to find improvised solutions in order to set up their tables and at the same time pay attention to traffic.

The new concept aims to improve this situation. From January 2025, Puschkinstraße will be converted into a traffic -calmed area, which is an important gap in the marketplace. Here cars can only drive at walking pace, which will significantly increase security for pedestrians and cyclists.

advantages for pedestrians and restaurateurs

In the second step, Puschkinstraße is to be completely declared a pedestrian zone, including the cathedral road and the cathedral courtyard. This means that pedestrians can use this area freely and that the restaurateurs are allowed to set up their tables without additional safety measures. However, this will also mean that the existing parking spaces are largely eliminated.

The redesign is also designed to be barrier -free, with adapted curbs and new lounge areas. The advisory board has rated the project positively, and the majority of the building committee has also agreed. The city council will have the last word, with the next meeting on November 11th, where the final plans are decided.
