Schwerin is planning a new city history museum: a look into the past!

(STM) Schwerin is at the beginning of an exciting cultural adventure! The city plans to create the establishment of a new city history museum, which is intended to impressively document the rich and diverse history of the state capital. A first rough concept is already available and promises to take visitors on a fascinating journey through time through the history of Schwerin.

The idea for the museum was first launched in 2014 by the ASK Schwerin under the then city representative Ralph Martini. Despite initial resistance, the project was increasingly supported in politics and urban society. After intensive discussions and location tests, the decision for the butcher market was made as an ideal location in 2021. Here, in the heart of Schwerin, a new building will be built that not only offers enough space, but also creates the right atmosphere for the presentation of city history.

The coarse concept: a look into the future

The new museum is built on an impressive area of 2655 square meters, of which 1700 square meters are intended for exhibition rooms. The permanent exhibition, entitled "Science Schwerin", will lead visitors through various thematic acts, starting with the Slavic settlement and the development of Schwerin to the residence city. A special highlight will be the exhibition to the residence ensemble, which addresses the cultural and architectural character of the city.

But that's not all! The coarse concept also provides for a museum shop, a foyer and an event hall that should make the museum a living place for encounter. The plans are ambitious, and the appointment of the Schwerin residence ensemble as a World Heritage Site gives the project additional tailwind. One goal is to open the museum by 2027, and the first steps have already been taken. The ICOMOS has rated the objective positively, which only increases the anticipation for this cultural highlight in Schwerin.
