Schwerin celebrates unit: Chancellor Scholz and Kaiser at the ceremony!

In Schwerin, the celebrations for the Day of German Unity take place today, an important event for the Federal Republic of Germany. Particularly noteworthy is the ceremony, which takes place in the renowned Mecklenburg State Theater and expected 450 invited guests, including Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. On this day, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) will also have their say, which leads the ceremony.

Traditionally, the ceremony begins with an ecumenical service in the impressive cathedral of the state capital. State bishops Kristina Kühnbaum-Schmidt and Archbishop Heiner Koch will keep their sermons and create a spiritual framework for the celebrations.

a colorful start with increased security measures

Manuela Schwesig, as the incumbent Federal Council President and thus host of the central unit celebration, had already opened the three -day citizens' festival in downtown Schwerin the day before. This offers the federal states, the Bundestag, Federal Council, ministerial representatives and various institutions the opportunity to imagine their own pavilions and stands. The citizens' festival is supplemented by a varied cultural program. The highlight of the evening is the concert by the well -known pop singer Roland Kaiser, who will appear in front of the symbol of Schwerin, the castle.

In her opening speech, Schwesig emphasized the courage and determination of the people in East Germany, who competed in 1989 with their peaceful protest against the SED dictatorship and the wall. "That was the beginning of the way to German unity," recalled Schwesig, stating that despite the past 34 years there is still reason to be happy and celebrating. These celebrations are under the motto “Segen combined”, a call to the community and cohesion.

The previous day, Chancellor Scholz had invited the citizens in Schwerin to exchange. Around 160 participants were present at this citizens' discussion, who asked questions on various topics such as care, hospital reform and the discussion about a possible ban on the AfD. However, Scholz, however, commented on the latter and explained that this is currently not up for debate.

In the light of an increased safety requirement that was developed due to the latest knife attacks, the police put extensive security measures into force in Schwerin. A large police force is used to ensure security during the celebrations to protect the participants.
