Celebrate unit: Medal is reminiscent of Mecklenburg milestones!
Germany experienced a historic turn in 1990. The German Democratic Republic joined the West and reunification became a reality. 41 years after the division, a new chapter began that is characterized by celebrations. After celebrating in 1992 and 2007, another unit celebration in the picturesque Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2024. This opportunity should not only be used to celebrate, but also to present the diversity and variety of companies and associations in the country.
The Mecklenburg coin account also played a central role in the celebrations, which was founded in Neubrandenburg in 1990. At the first unit celebration in 1992, the coin account actively participated, even if the original plans to shape their own medal for the day of German unity, had to be rejected for financial reasons. Nevertheless, the coin account presented its current projects at an information stand, including medals in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The medal for the Day of German Unity
In 1992, the Mecklenburg coin account had the idea of designing a unique silver medal as a gift to the official participants in the unit celebration. This medal should not only present the federal eagle and the small national coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but also the date and logo of the event. Although this plan could not be implemented, it did not mean that participation was unsuccessful.
At the Schlachtermarkt in Schwerin, the coin account exhibited various medals at its stand, which in cooperation with the Württemberg Minister County Department Dr. Ising had arisen. This opportunity to present itself to a wider audience led not only to a large rush at the stand, but also to important contacts for the future.
The success of this appearance was shown in a letter of thanks from the company's founder to the Ministry of Finance. In this letter he described how helpful participation in the celebrations for the company was. In particular, the positive impressions of the number of visitors and the opportunity to get in touch with the Mecklenburg Foundation in Ratzeburg were highlighted.
The Peenemünde Medal and its return
Two years later, however, other plans were on the agenda. The Mecklenburger Münzkontor planned a medal for the 50th anniversary of the first successful rocket start in Peenemünde on October 3, 1942. Unfortunately, the official anniversary celebration was canceled after it was publicly criticized. The rocket, which was successfully shot into space at the time, was also built in the Army test institution in Peenemünde under conditions that included forced labor. This meant that reflection on the darker history and the associated responsibility came to the fore.
The medal, which was supposed to be developed as part of the anniversary celebration, was therefore unearthed as a symbol for this complex historical context. While at the same time the Mecklenburger Münzkontor proudly looked at the medal for German unity, the link with the dark chapters of German history could not be denied.
Nevertheless, the business of the coin account has developed extremely positive since participating in the celebrations on German unity. After the event, the demand and the number of orders for the design and publication of other medals, which reminded of various significant events and anniversaries in the region.
The medal for the 1000th anniversary of Mecklenburg in 1995 was particularly eye-catching among the orders after the unit, as well as the medal for the first German seaside resort in Heiligendamm and a medal for the Dobbertin monastery. The success of the Rügen medal, which was very popular, confirmed the strategic step of the company to put itself on a more professional basis and to look for a suitable location in the Neubrandenburg region.Another sign of gratitude and appreciation for the successful participation in the celebrations for the Day of German Unity was the addition of a Rügen medal with the letter of thanks to the Ministry of Finance. This shows how significant participation in these celebrations was not only for the festival culture, but also for the economic development of the company. The participation of the Mecklenburg coin account in the unit celebration has opened long -term perspectives that resulted in constant growth of the company and its reputation.
