Rehkitz rescue in Northwest Mecklenburg: First saved 188 fawns!

In Northwest Mecklenburg, the rescue of deer gills becomes an impressive success story. Compared to previous years, 188 fawns have already been saved this year, which has surpassed the numbers in recent years. Heiko Funk, a hunter and drone pilot, emphasized that the operations carried out under the district hunting association took place in a wide range of 2200 hectares that was monitored with the help of drone teams. For comparison: in 2022 there were only around 960 hectares.

The efforts in this area impressively show how volunteer engagement and modern technology come together to protect the little deer from the dangers of mowing machines. During the wild weeks in the district agricultural museum of the village of Mecklenburg, Funk vividly presented the process of the fawn rescue.

Ten drone pilots support the rescue operation

The district hunting association of Nordwestmecklenburg is now relating to a team of ten volunteer drone pilots, supported by 25 volunteers who are committed to protecting the young game. These specialists are responsible for monitoring the country that is up to the Mahd in order to collect the fawn safely before mowing machines can do damage. The animals are only returned when the danger is over, and they are stored in the shade on the field.

The process itself is intensely, such as Sylvia Uhlmann, also a hunter and drone pilot. "It is an elaborate work, but this prevents animal suffering," she said. According to Renee Pollak, the chairman of the district hunting association, the success rate is up to 95 percent.

An attractive event attracts numerous visitors

The drone demonstration and the associated fawn rescue were only part of the extensive program that took place as part of the Wild Week 2024. The event, which was organized in cooperation with the district hunting association, the district farmers' association and the district agricultural museum, enjoyed great popularity and attracted more than 1100 visitors. Museum director Björn Berg emphasized that the event also included a farmers' market in which local products were presented.

The district administrator of Nordwestmecklenburg, Tino Schomann, praised the event as unique for the region and emphasized the important cooperation between hunters and farmers. This cooperation is not only shown in the fawn rescue, but also in the presentation of diverse products that were offered during the wild weeks.

Especially in the focus, a work of art created by Ulf-Peter Schwarz was, especially in the event, which was created together with children and was auctioned for a charitable purpose. The commandments for this can already be submitted to the district hunting association, and the highlight of this project will be in Neukloster at the farmers and hunterball in 2025.

The district hunting association offers a wide range of support options for people who want to be committed to the fawn. Interested parties can book drone pilots or join the team of helpers.
