BUND orders four submarines: Wismar becomes the new submarine center!

In a surprising step, the federal government plans to order four new submarines from Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) despite financial bottlenecks. This decision could have far-reaching consequences for the Wismar location, where part of the submarines could be built. According to a confidential submission of the Bundestag's budget committee, which is available to the AFP news agency, the total value of the U212CD submarine is almost five billion euros. There is an urgent need for action to meet NATO requirements.

The exact details and schedules for the order are still unclear, but it is clear: Prepotation is required to secure the production capacities in Wismar. As early as this year, one billion euros will be due for procurement. It remains to be seen how the submarine of the submarine building between the TKMS locations in Kiel and Wismar will take place. TKMS did not want to comment on inquiries from the NDR, and the Ministry of Defense could neither confirm nor denied the reports. Nevertheless, the ministry is determined to promote as many procurement projects as possible before the new elections.

uncertain future for TKMS

The future of the TKMS shipyard is on the brink. Federal Minister of Economics Habeck has already indicated that the focus could possibly be on the construction of converter platforms. These developments raise questions about how the shipyard and jobs will continue in the region. The cooperation between Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems with the shipbuilding company Naval Vessels Lürssen could play a crucial role.
