Water damage forces sports hall in Neubrandenburg to close!

The sports hall on Robert-Koch-Straße in Neubrandenburg stands still! The doors have been closed since September 20, and the final decommissioning was announced on October 21. The reason? A catastrophic water damage caused by a defective rainfall line has almost completely set the parquet floor under water. The Neubrandenburger Wohnungsgesellschaft (Neuwoges) explains that the soil was swollen and massively increased so that a repair is impossible.

The consequences are dramatic: numerous sports clubs, two schools and even kindergartens are affected. With immediate effect, the users of the hall were given notice of termination without notice. Sports coordinator Stefan Köpke, however, reassured that alternative training opportunities are provided for the clubs. But the uncertainty remains while the city and the Neuwoges are looking for solutions.

Future of the sports hall uncertain

The Neuwoges now has three options on the table: renovation and modernization of the hall, demolition and new construction or a temporary repair for the next five years. But no matter which solution is chosen, the planning alone could take a year, followed by up to two years for implementation. A reopening in the next two years is therefore excluded.

The sports hall, which has been owned by the Neuwoges since 2018, has already been in need of renovation. The purchase was originally made to make the hall available for other uses, but due to the high need for hall times, the operation was maintained. The hall even served as emergency accommodation for refugees from Ukraine. Now it is facing an uncertain future, while the city and the Neuwoges are feverishly looking for solutions.
