In an urgent appeal, the European Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Bettina Martin (SPD), asked the municipalities to intensify their support for Ukraine. At a conference on the development of the Ukrainian partner region of Chernihiw, she emphasized that the reconstruction must begin primarily at regional and local level. "We don't leave the people in Ukraine alone," said Martin and underlined the urgency of help.

Martin reported on her personal impressions during a trip with a delegation from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to the crisis region, which is located directly on the Russian and Belarusian border. "The situation of the people there is catastrophic," said Martin. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) also got an idea of the emergency in Kiev and Tschernihiw and confirmed the support of the country.

Concrete aid projects in Ukraine

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has already actively helped the construction of shelters for schools and promotes the exchange of scientists. In addition, traumatized people are psychologically cared for and projects for the protection of Ukrainian cultural assets are developed. Martin hopes for other partnerships between municipalities in MV and cities in Ukraine to strengthen support at all levels - from municipalities to international organizations. Representatives from France, Finland and the USA also took part in the conference, which underlines the international dimension of support.
