Comics of the GDR: Erich Schmitt's heir lives on in Neubrandenburg!

The GDR may be history, but your comics continue to live! Thomas Möller (64), the head behind the mosaic and comic club Neubrandenburg (MCC), brings the timeless drawings and stories back into the spotlight. Since 1995 he has organized 66 exhibitions in East Germany who celebrated the works of long -deceased artists. "Yes, the comics survived!" Says Möller with conviction.

A highlight of his work is the homage to Erich Schmitt, who would have celebrated its 100th birthday on March 11th. Schmitt, a master of political caricature, was known for his humorous drawings in the Berliner Zeitung. He left an impressive legacy with around 40 published books and unforgettable characters such as the robot "colleague Blech". Möller and his MCC colleagues have published a book with 100 drawings by artists from all over Germany in honor of the inspiration of the old master.

Mosaik-A cult comic over generations

The mosaic that was born in the GDR remains an integral part of German comic culture. Möller remembers a real collector's piece as he got his first subscription for the mosaic at the age of 13! Abrafaxes that have been traveling to world history for 50 years have established themselves as the most successful comic magazine in Germany. Despite the challenges after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the mosaic survived and today counts around 40,000 subscribers.

The mosaic will be 70 in the coming year, and the Abrafaxes celebrate its own 50th anniversary. The stories are not only entertaining, but also educational and offer insights into historical events. The comic has established itself as a family booklet that connects and inspires generations.
