Wind power or shock? The real opportunities for our municipalities!

In Germany, a change in energy generation is emerging, in particular by the increased use of wind turbines. However, this development also brings challenges, especially in rural regions, where the changeover from traditional agricultural landscapes to industrially shaped areas such as wind farms is surprising and shocking for many citizens. At a meeting with representatives of the wind power industry, Peter Seifert from the planning association Mecklenburg Seenplatte expressed that the acceptance of wind power projects could possibly increase if the local residents would benefit more from these positive changes.

The energy transition that is due for Germany requires not only an adaptation of the infrastructure, but also a rethink in the population. Seifert added that it is not only about wind turbines, but also about solar parks, substation and other projects that bring about changes in the landscapes. Historical comparisons with other regions that have experienced similar changes after the Second World War show that broad acceptance is possible if people also benefit from the advantages.

economic advantages for municipalities

The Green Member of the Landtag Hannes Damm underlined the advantages that renewable energies already offer the municipalities today. Municipalities now receive three -digit million amounts from trade taxes that come from wind power and other renewable energy sources. These income could serve as an incentive to increase acceptance among the population.

Infrastructure planning is still a critical point in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Robert Vogt von Energetrag pointed out that the low progress in area planning since 2011, where only 0.2 percent of the state area was shown for wind power, led to the fact that many citizens are impatient. In the coming years, however, the designated area with wind power is to increase significantly, with the goal of the federal government to increase the wind suitability areas from 0.8 percent to 2.1 percent by 2032.

The planning associations accept the challenge and have already submitted concrete plans. The Planning Association Region Rostock plans to implement the target of 2.1 percent in one step, while the Westmecklenburg Planning Association would also like to implement this plan by 2027. In other areas, such as Western Pomerania, an intermediary improved identification between 1.4 and 2.1 percent is sought.

permits and challenges

A positive aspect that Jaeger appeals to the Lee MV industry association is the increasing number of permits for wind turbines. In the first half of the year, a total output of 350 megawatts was approved, which indicates progress in implementation. Nevertheless, the challenge remains that often no new wind turbines can be put into operation. A central reason is often the non -existent network infrastructure that makes it easier for other federal states to use renewable energy to a larger extent.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the energy generated can exceed the demand. There are possibilities to use excess energy, for example through the production of hydrogen. However, Jaeger warns that the area of heat generation should also focus on, since the proportion of renewable energies remains low and there is therefore a lot of potential.

Overall, it can be stated that the development of wind power in Germany brings exciting progress, which, however, have to be promoted by local adjustments and strategies. A more precise evaluation of the approval situation and the potential change in municipalities could play an important role in order to meet both the economic and ecological goals.
