Disaster protection in the district: Exercise for the emergency of flood & tornado

The district of Ludwigslust-Parchim is intensively busy preparing for possible disaster cases. There is currently a so -called staff framework examination, in which all affected emergency services come together to develop strategies and processes for emergencies. The aim is to be prepared, even if several large operations have to be mastered at the same time.

A fictional scenario that those responsible have come up with dramatic events: There could be flooding on the Elbe, while at the same time a serious train accident with many injured and dead admission. In addition, a tornado pulls through Parchim. "This combination is an enormous challenge for our emergency services," says District Administrator Stefan Sternberg (SPD).

Structured planning and material procurement

Sternberg emphasizes that such a situation not only represents a challenge on site, but also calls for a well-organized planning department. The current exercise focuses on developing communication and supply channels so that the flow of information works smoothly during a crisis. According to Sternberg, the local fire brigades are experienced and know what their job requires, but in extreme situations you need additional support.

This means that the rescuers have to be replaced by additional forces at some point. In addition, important materials such as sandbags and clearing vehicles have to be procured and delivered. "This cannot happen ad hoc; we therefore need a functioning backing," explains the district administrator.

Operating Coordination and Crisis Management

In the disaster scenario there are three technical operations lines that coordinate the respective disaster events. The technical operations management in Dömitz and Boizenburg takes care of the flood, while another line in Hagenow is responsible for the train accident. A local crisis team has the task of monitoring and controlling the tornado situation in Parchim.

This crisis staff is in close exchange with the crisis bars of other counties and federal states. The tasks include not only medical and technical support, but also logistical measures to supply the emergency services, such as with food and necessary sanitary facilities.

"I would like to thank everyone involved, from municipal institutions to the regular federal organizations, for their support in this exercise," sums up Landrat Sternberg. He is convinced that the district is well positioned to meet several crises even at the same time. The sustainable network that was forged in this exercise could be decisive in an emergency in order to be able to act quickly and efficiently.
