Rheinsberg: Core power plant dismantling lasts until 2040-citizens are frustrated!

Rheinsberg, Deutschland - The Rheinsberg nuclear power plant, once a proud symbol of the GDR, has been a relic in the Mecklenburg Lake District since its switch -off in 1990. The dismantling, which began in 1995, is in length and causes resentment in the region. Despite the fact that the power plant still offers around 150 jobs, people are frustrated with the sluggish progress. "We are not a fritenbude," says a worker who criticizes the long duration of the dismantling.

dismantling runs until 2040

The dismantling work is a tedious process that is carried out under strict safety regulations. The last fuel elements were removed in 2001, and the reactor followed in 2007. But the actual dismantling work only began after 2017. The spokeswoman for the waste disposal plant for Nuclearlagen GmbH (EWN) explains that the complete decontamination and the dismantling could take until 2040. The people in Rheinsberg are dissatisfied: "Millions of the power plant flow every year, but hardly anything happens on the outside," they complain.

The challenges are enormous. A simple door can take up to one month, since every structure has to be examined for radioactive contamination. "This always entails delays," said the spokeswoman. The blueprints from the 1960s often do not agree with reality, which brings additional complications. The dismantling of a nuclear power plant is an extremely complex matter, and the hope of a quick demolition of the last buildings remains unfulfilled for the time being.

financial burden and uncertainty

The financial resources for dismantling are considerable. Every year, around 30 million euros flow into the work, which has been a total of around 700 million euros from tax funds since 1990. However, the EWN spokeswoman cannot guarantee that the dismantling will be completed by 2040. An earlier plan already provided for the end of the essential dismantling measures in 2014. The patience of the residents is put to the test, while the dismantling of the former GDR power plant continues to progress at a snail's pace.
