Food rescuer in Friedrichshain: This is how you fill your fridge!

In Berlin-Friedrichshain, many people often have empty refrigerators and wallets at the end of the month. To counteract this problem, René Heiden has opened a special supermarket that offers reduced food. Heiden has been running the shop since the beginning of 2023 and has launched it in his neighborhood due to the great demand. Customers often use the "Too Good to Go" app to stock up with reduced foods.

Customers can pick up reserved bags with remaining foods at a greatly reduced price. The offer includes a variety of foods, including sushi, sandwiches, salads and organic food. The exact composition of the bags remains a surprise for customers, but typically they contain fruit, vegetables, milk, cream and often a loaf of "time for bread". The bags cost between 3 and 4 euros, which corresponds to about a third of the regular goods value.

surprise bags and online offers

Heiden sells online food on Saturdays that are no longer stable until next week. As a rule, three to four bags are offered online, which are quickly sold in 95 percent of cases. Customers appreciate the opportunity to deal with food creatively and try out new products. The prices of the bags are 9 or 12 euros, which offers a good price-performance ratio.

The "Too Good to Go" app plays a central role in saving food from the garbage can and helps users save money. Around 11 million tons of food in Germany end up in the trash every year, with around 6.6 million tons of waste being created in private households alone, according to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). On average, consumers throw around 79 kilograms of food away per year.

The app enables users to save excess food from bakeries and supermarkets. After downloading the app, you can determine your location and view the offers nearby. The prices for rescued food vary, bakeries are between 3 and 5 euros and between 3 and 9 euros for supermarkets. When picking up the surfing bags, users must show the confirmation in the app.

The idea behind "Too Good to Go" is to reduce food waste and at the same time give consumers the opportunity to save money and act sustainably, such as berlin-live.de
