Church and politics: How can you strengthen cohesion?
Berlin, Deutschland - in Germany, social cohesion currently plays an important role, especially in the context of the recently held Bundestag election. The leading representatives of the Catholic and Evangelical Church are pushing for a quick and responsible formation of government to manage the challenges in front of which the country is standing. Georg Bätzing, chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, emphasized the need to listen and understand in order to find fair solutions and to make compromises. He is supported by Bischöfin Kirsten Fehrs, who points out that the parties of the Democratic Middle are now responsible for dealing constructively with the election result and strengthening the political framework for cosmopolitan Germany, such as kathpress.at reported.
The Bundestag election has also shown an alarming trend: According to a survey by the Infratest Dimap opinion research institute, commissioned by ARD, only 27 percent of German trust in the churches to promote social cohesion. This result shows that the churches remain behind political institutions in terms of their role in social structure, which are perceived as a contribution to cohesion by 28 percent of the respondents. With 76 percent, sports clubs are the most valued institution in this area, followed by educational institutions with 56 percent, unions with 49 percent and the media with 48 percent. Even Internet and social media do better with 32 percent. These results are worrying for the churches, which traditionally be considered important actors in the area of social cohesion, as Sonntagenblatt.de
