Calcium and nutrition: How to lower your colon cancer risk!

A new British study by the University of Oxford shows that a calcium -rich diet, in particular the consumption of milk, can significantly reduce the risk of colon cancer. According to the examination, which has been carried out over a period of almost 17 years, 300 milligrams of calcium can reduce the risk of around 17 percent per day, which corresponds approximately to a glass of milk. According to the researchers, this could be due to the ability of the calcium to bind themselves to bile acids and free fatty acids in the intestine and thus reduce their potentially carcinogenic effect, explains Dr. Keren paper, the senior researcher, as Lessentiel reported.

The role of nutrition

In the study, data of 542,778 women were examined, of which 12,251 fell ill with colon cancer over time. In addition to calcium, other foods such as fruit, whole grain products and fiber could also have a protective effect, but to a lesser extent. In contrast, the results also show that the consumption of alcohol and processed meat increases the risk of the disease. Already 20 grams of alcohol per day can increase the risk of around 15 percent, while eating 30 grams of red or processed meat, an increase in risk by around 8 percent, as reported by the University of Oxford and Cancer Research UK.

This comprehensive analysis strengthens the knowledge of previous studies on nutrition and its influence on cancer, especially the third most common tumor disease in Germany. The results are significant because they show a direct connection between calcium consumption and a reduced risk of colon cancer, which could possibly promote a targeted diet for prevention, according to the study authors.
