Hunting time on Rügen: protecting nature or torturing animals?

Bergen. The hunting season is in full swing! From the first weekend in November until January 31st, hunted on the popular island. Hunters, drivers and trained dogs are on the go to target deer, red deer and wild boar. But be careful! Walkers, mushroom collectors and drivers have to be particularly careful during this exciting time. There are many questions: Why is the forests shot and what are the exact rules?

The social hunts have already started and bring a variety of animals to the crosshairs. According to Thomas Nießen, the chairman of the Rügen-Hiddensee hunting association, hunting is not only carried out from tradition. It primarily serves nature conservation to avoid damage in forestry and agriculture. A healthy game population is crucial to counteract an overpopulation. "An overpopulation can lead to an unhealthy inventory development," explains Nießen. These hunts are logistically demanding; They require precise planning and responsibility to protect both the hunters and nature.

In autumn, hunting is made because the young animals are now independent. The dense foliage in summer also makes it difficult to watch the animals. "The safety of the uninvolved must be guaranteed," emphasizes Nießen. Drivers near hunting areas have to reduce their speed. Hunters ask the walkers to get on other days to avoid overlaps.

The fascination of hunting goes beyond the mere succumb of animals. It is an important instrument for minimizing game damage. "Where many animals live, there is also more damage," explains farmer and hunter Karl Father. Hunting plays a crucial role in the balance of nature and agriculture on the island of Rügen!
