Huawei Austria: Five years Tech4all and the fight for biodiversity

The Huawei Tech4all initiative celebrates its fifth anniversary with an impressive event, the Innovations for Biodiversity Forum, which recently took place in Vienna. The aim of this initiative is to contribute through digital technology to promote biological diversity and to support the UN sustainability goals. Harvey Zhang, the CEO of Huawei Austria, emphasizes how important technology is to deal with challenges in the areas of environment, education and digital integration.

Since 2019, the Tech4all program has been working with global partners and has already implemented projects worldwide in 53 protected areas that concentrate on preserving the environment. The results of biodiversity monitoring around the Neusiedler See in Austria are particularly remarkable, where audio technology is used to monitor bird species. Over two million audio files of 69 different birds were collected, which provide valuable data on biodiversity.

protective measures and research results

One of the central challenges is the decline in the tube habitats, which represent critical habitats for amphibians, mammals and birds. Dr. Christian Schulze from the University of Vienna argues that the decades of omission of the reversal has negatively influenced the state of the reed belts. The aim of research is to find out whether controlled fires can contribute to renewal and thus to biodiversity. Preliminary studies show that older reed areas have the greatest biodiversity.

In addition, a surveillance project in Poland was presented, which deals with the biological diversity in the Białowieża National Park. These findings are intended to develop targeted protective measures based on the specific needs of the ecosystems there.

The forum also showed innovative approaches to fire prevention. A Greek start-up, ProBotek, has developed a system that uses sensors, drones and AI to recognize potential fire hazards in real time. At the crucial moment, in the first 15 minutes after a fire, this technology could help plan evacuation routes and coordinate rescue operations.

Another highlight of the event was the presentation of a AI-based filter system in Norway, which preserves the invasive salmon from exterminating the local Atlantic axis. In 2023, this system successfully filtered 6,000 invasive fish, which offers great potential to extend this solution to all Norwegian rivers.

On the second day of the forum, media representatives had the opportunity to visit the Neusiedler See and to experience first -hand how digital technologies are used in nature conservation. It became clear that innovative technologies can contribute not only to promote biological diversity, but also to monitor and protect it.

The Tech4all initiative is therefore not only an advertising measure for Huawei, but a serious commitment to a sustainable digital future. With these projects and support from partnerships, an attempt is made to promote an inclusive and sustainable society.

Information and news about Tech4all can be found again on the official Huawei Tech4all website. Huawei's commitment in these areas could serve as a model for other companies and organizations that are interested in sustainable solutions. Further details on this remarkable initiative can here .
