Greens in Wiesbaden: tearful farewell to Omid Nouripour!

The Greens in Germany are facing a dramatic change! At the federal party conference in Wiesbaden, Omid Nouripour, the popular co-chair and "realo-haudegen" from Frankfurt, was said goodbye with great applause. Just one year after his election with an overwhelming 83.6 percent, he has to vacate his place, while the party is fighting only 12 percent in the surveys. A farewell that was shaped by emotions - tears flowed when Nouripour and Ricarda Lang were passed by the delegates.

The resignation of Nouripour is not just a personal step, but a strategic fresh start for the Greens who are preparing for the Bundestag election in February. "We are the start," is the motto of the party congress, which is the perfect opportunity for a new beginning. Nouripour himself described his retreat as the "commandment of the decency" and emphasized that he would have liked to continue the job, but the circumstances did not allow it. The pressure on the party is enormous after she couldn't even move into the state parliament in Brandenburg.

emotional farewell and new opportunities

The standing ovation for Nouripour were not only a sign of gratitude, but also an appeal to the unity within the party. Mathias Wagner, the Hessian state parliamentary group leader, sees Robert Habeck's candidate for the chancellor's candidacy. He sees a lot of space for the Greens between the political heavyweights Friedrich Merz and Olaf Scholz. While Nouripour goes, Habeck is officially named Chancellor's candidate on Sunday, together with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

The Greens have reached an impressive number of members in the past, despite the crises. Nouripour will run for the Bundestag again on February 23, and the Hessian Greens will determine their state list on December 14th. A farewell that is not an end, but a new beginning!
