Karben plans 3.46 million euros for new construction projects - what's coming now?

in the city of Karben, where finances come under pressure, Mayor Guido Rahn announces alarming developments. In a meeting of the city parliament, he presented the budget for 2025 and warned of an impending deficit of around 900,000 euros. "It crunches everywhere," says Rahn, who links the worrying financial prospects with falling income and increasing expenses. The city is expected to pay 1 million euros to the district administration, while at the same time the allocations from Hesse decrease by 400,000 euros. The total income of 60 million euros could shrink to just 40 million euros.

But not only the numbers are worrying. The city also plans to build large construction projects that are to be realized in the coming years. At the Groß-Karben train station, a new sports hall will be created for 6.1 million euros, which should benefit the elementary school students of Kloppenheim in particular. Construction is expected to begin in 2026. In addition, an apartment building in Petterweil is to be built, and the meadow between the sports field and the binding ring is used for a new day care facility and a multi-generation house.

financial challenges and construction projects

With a debt of around 6.7 million euros, the city has spent a lot in recent years, but is now forced to borrow 975,000 euros from banks. Despite the tense situation, Rahn remains optimistic because the city can generate additional income through the sale of building land. These should flow into various projects, including the renovation of play and sports fields as well as the equipment of the fire brigade and daycare centers. The city council will be advised on the budget in the coming weeks before it will be finally decided on December 13th in a public meeting.
