New biological in Neu-Ulrichstein: Students research for the environment!
In Neu-Ulrichstein near Homberg, the innovative "biological" will soon open, a research center that is supposed to bring the students closer to the fascinating world of environmental sciences. Here, pupils with their own hands can research and discover what is going on in nature. The focus is on practical experiences that go far beyond reading textbooks. Biology teacher Martin Linke explains: "The students learn with several senses in terms of the importance of earthworms for the soil." This exciting initiative will be officially launched on November 15th.
fascination of earthworm and climate change
Currently, students from the Homberg Ohmtal School are active in the research center research center and observe earthworms through microscopes. You will learn how these little living things loosen up the soil and what effects dryness and floods have on them. The project developed by Finja Fuchs as part of her thesis at the university is part of a cooperation between universities and schools that support the biological. Dr. Ann-Kathrin Lörracher, who developed the pedagogical concept, is enthusiastic about the cooperation and commitment of the students.
The biological is directed by renowned scientists, including Prof. Dr. Harald Lesch, who is known for his ability to explain complex scientific topics in an understandable manner. "The biological has grown slowly and is now supposed to make a jump forward," says Lörracher. Students are not only introduced to the world of earthworms, but also in the effects of chemicals on water creatures. "When we see how an oil film acts on water, we understand the consequences of pollution much better," she adds.
a place for experiments
The research center offers students the opportunity to work with simple microscopes and carry out experiments that are often not possible in universities. "Here the students can immerse themselves directly in scientific practice," explains Lörracher. The demand is great: every 5th and 6th classes of the Ohmtalschule come by regularly for projects. In order to expand the offer, modules for teachers who want to experiment themselves are also developed. "It's about sparking enthusiasm for scientific work," says Lörracher radiantly.
