Experience the Roman period: New AR tour in the Rheingau-Taunus district!
A new initiative to promote the Roman heritage in the Rheingau-Taunus district takes shape. This is a pilot project of the augmented reality that enables those interested in history to travel to Roman times via app. The circular route "Limespur Castellum Zugmantel" extends over five kilometers and has its starting point in Taunusstein-Orlen, on the historic Limeskastell Zugmantel. The tour takes about two hours and is suitable for children from the age of six.
The tour comprises five stations, which are guided by the fictional Roman children Caius and Celia. With the "AbnTR-App", buildings can be discovered virtually, including a castle, a Roman bath, an amphitheater and a border station on the Limes. This project was presented in Taunusstein at the end of December and is part of a plan to upgrade the Limes as a tourist attraction, such as hessenschau.de reported.
UNESCO World Heritage and historical importance
The Obergermanisch-Rätische Limes, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2005, runs over a length of about 35 kilometers through the Rheingau-Taunus district. This borders were built between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD to separate and protect the Roman civilization from the underdeveloped areas of the Germanic tribes. Originally, the Limes attachments consisted of wood and were replaced by palisades, trenches and earth wall in later phases to make it difficult to penetrate enemy riding hordes.
Special remains of the Limes can be found in the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park, including the most important castle for train coat near Orlen, which at times housed a Roman cohort. Only sparse remnants are preserved from the two hectare castle. Important finds from the excavations around 1900 are located in the Wiesbaden State Museum and in the Saalburg Museum. In addition, a watch tower and part of the border wall were reconstructed near the castle tensile coat, while an apprenticeship has opened up the historical site. The Limes is now in a row with world-famous sites such as the Acropolis and the Tajm Mahal, as rheingau-taunus.de
