New Advisory Board for Documenta: Kassel reacts to anti-Semitism scandal!

The documenta in Kassel is facing a radical change! The city council has decided to set up a scientific advisory board and an extended supervisory board. This decision was announced on Monday evening and marks a decisive step in the realignment of the renowned art exhibition. The new advisory board will act as a headquarters to professionally advise and support the management and the Supervisory Board. The aim is to take up current social and scientific debates and to bring international and diverse perspectives into the documenta.

background of change

The urgent need for changes was triggered by the anti-Semitism scandal around Documenta 15 in 2022. During the opening of the exhibition, a banner from the Indonesian artist collective "Taring Padi" was left behind, which contained anti -Semitic motifs. These controversy led to massive criticisms and ensured a storm of indignation. As a result, the general director of Kunstschau, Sabine Schormann, had to vacate her post, and in November 2023 the entire finding commission for the upcoming Documenta 16 resigned in 2027. The city of Kassel has now set the course for a fundamental reform in order to avoid such incidents in the future and to bring the documenta to a new course.

A specific date for the establishment of the new advisory board is still pending, but the city of Kassel is determined to tackle the challenges of the past and lead the documenta into a positive future. The coming months will be decisive to see how these changes will affect the art scene and the public perception of the documenta.
