Melsungen says goodbye to street master Klaus-Bernd Eilhauer
Melsungen, Deutschland - A chapter comes to an end! Klaus-Bernd Eilhauer, the long-time head of the road maintenance department in Melsungen, says goodbye to his post after almost 24 years. Since April 2001, Eilhauer has been the face of the road maintenance department, which is responsible for the safety and maintenance of the streets in the Schwalm-Eder district and in the district of Kassel. The 65-year-old, who was born in Eschwege and grew up in North Rhine-Westphalia, not only loved his work, but literally lived it. "I will miss the team here very much. Everyone," he admits with a heavy heart.
The farewell is visibly difficult. "I almost grew up on a masterpiece," he says, looking back on his childhood, in which he often played on the grounds of his father's road maintenance department. After an apprenticeship as a concrete and reinforced concrete builder and a studies in Trier, he took over various positions before moving to Spangenberg in 2000 and took over the management of the master's shop in Melsungen. During this time he was the central coordinator between the authorities and emergency services, always ready to act in crisis situations such as the hurricane Kyrill 2007.
The challenges of the road maintenance department
The tasks of the road maintenance department are diverse: from winter services to the maintenance of green spaces to the repair of road damage. Eilhauer and his team were responsible for 380 kilometers of roads, which have been expanded by an additional 350 kilometers in recent years. "Sudden winter breakdowns and storms can turn a whole day upside down," explains Eilhauer, who was always accessible to master the challenges. In retirement, he plans to spend his time with trips and excursions, while the provisional management of the road maintenance department has already been advertised.
