75 years of the Sylt youth lake home: Share your memories now!

The youth lake home of the Kassel district will celebrate its 75th anniversary in the coming year, 2025. In preparation for this anniversary, the in -house company asks former guests for memories and stories from the past decades. Uwe Pietsch, manager of the youth and leisure facilities, has formulated specific questions about experiences in the tent camp of the 1960s.

As the press-service.de , the youth home is visited by many generations and has a long history. Before the First World War, the site was an undeveloped dune landscape. During the First World War, guns and wooden barracks were built here. During the Second World War, it served as accommodation for up to 300 marine artillerymen and became a refuge for displaced persons after the end of the war.

The search for a suitable site for a youth lake home began in 1949 by the Federal Railway Directorate Kassel and the city of Kassel. The first camp took place in the same year, and 560 young people spent their vacation there in 1950. From 1952, relaxation cures for children and stays for schools were also possible.

A district council decision in 1954 led to the purchase of the Skagerrak camp and a 30-year lease agreement. A inheritance contract for 90 years has existed since 1961. In the following years, the area was further developed by the conversion of old wooden houses into modern clinker buildings, whereby the round building was completed in 1961. Current leisure activities include a sports field, a forest stage and a 400 meter long walk to the west beach.

In recent years, considerable investments in renovations and modern technology equipment have been made. Last year the youth lake home recorded over 61,300 overnight stays.
