Orphaned holiday paradise: Fehmarn's dilapidated Ferienstätte is increasingly detached

On the picturesque southern beach of Fehmarn, a once popular holiday paradise threatens to become a place of decay. An alarming picture has been evident on the site of the former holiday complex in Meeschendorf: The dilapidated buildings are abandoned and neglected as if the time had stopped here. Although Jufa Hotels Austria GmbH signed a 75-year leasehold agreement with the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in 2019, there is hardly any progress in the urgently needed development of the area. According to Merkur in July 2023 also damaged the terrain, as a fire in the technical area.

challenges for Jufa Hotels

Despite the setbacks, Jufa wants to advance the project of a family hotel. However, the construction project is under pressure, since there is a strict ban on new hotels on the coast, which significantly limits the possibilities for building. "We are working on a new concept and are in exchange with the responsible authorities," said Ulrike Grochot, head of the Jufa Hotels. Nevertheless, there are worrying voices that a planned citizens' decision could endanger the progress of the project, as the hna reported. Critics are concerned about the effects on the region and nature.

Currently the question remains whether Jufa can keep the leasehold agreement if the hotel project turns out to be unexpected. District Administrator Torsten Warnecke and the responsible politicians are optimistic and support the plan, while the company itself emphasizes that an exit from the contract is not considered. "There are no efforts to get out of the leasehold agreement," said Jufa spokesman Martin Seger-Owann. The future of the former holiday complex remains unclear - the charm of the former vacation time increasingly gives way to decay.
