The switch to environmentally friendly drive technologies is supported by funding from the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV), which provide a total of 8.06 million euros for projects in local public transport and waste management. District Administrator said: "With the commissioning of a fuel cell collection vehicle and 15 fuel cell solo buses, we are on the right path for a nationwide use".

The new technology has a range of 350 kilometers per tank filling, which is comparable to the diesel vehicles previously used. These environmentally friendly buses are refueled at the Omnibus Bosshofershof in Groß-Gerau via a mobile hydrogen filling station, which is also funded by federal funds. The use of such technologies has not only ecological but also economic advantages, since they can reduce municipal expenses in the long term by lower operating costs.

In addition, the new recycling center in Gernsheim was opened on January 2, 2024. District Administrator Will and other official representatives celebrated the opening, which took place after a six -month construction process. The new recycling center is part of a comprehensive network in the region that offers citizens easy access to the professional disposal of valuable materials. This is particularly important in times of growing garbage. In 2022, around 28,000 tons of waste were processed at the recycling centers of AWS/Riedwerke, which underlines the effectiveness of the concept to avoid waste, as Gernsheim's mayor Peter Burger emphasized.
