Great fire in Mainz-Hechtsheim: warehouse destroyed, guests in danger!
In the night of Saturday there was a devastating fire in the Mainz-Hechtsheim industrial area, which led to a complete destruction of a warehouse. The incident was reported by drivers on the nearby A60 motorway at 9:29 p.m., which led to a comprehensive use of the fire brigade. The causes of the fire are still unknown, but the extinguishing work extended over twelve hours, which indicates the intensity of the fire.
When the emergency services arrived, dense smoke from all openings of the building penetrated, and the flame inferno was visible from afar. The fire brigade managed to get the fire under control, but due to the enormous heat radiation, the building was abandoned, so that the emergency services concentrated on the protection of surrounding objects. There were several warehouses and a liquid gas tank in the immediate vicinity, the safety of which was heavily at risk. The neighboring event location, the pyramid, had to be isolated for two hours during the fire to protect the guests.
The fire service of the fire brigade
The fire brigade alerted almost all voluntary fire departments in the city, and helpful members of the event location offered the emergency services drinks and shelter. In the initial phase, impressive 8,000 liters of water per minute were used to combat the fire. At the same time, however, it turned out that dangerous gas occurred from the liquid gas tank. With a massive use of extinguishing water and foam, the risk of an explosion could be banned, but exploded gas bottles within the hall loudly.
The destruction of the roof and the walls of the warehouse made it necessary to request heavy excavators from the Technical Aid Agency (THW) in order to remove the rubble and reach the brand. After about three hours of intensive extinguishing, the fire brigade had the situation under control so that there was no longer any greater spread, but the extinguishing work had to be continued until the early hours of the morning.
effects on the environment
The enormous smoke development caused an unpleasant situation in Mainz, the clouds of smoke pulled far beyond the urban area. Fire brigade spokesman Michael Ehresmann instructed the population to keep windows and doors closed, since the biting vapors were not only uncomfortable, but also represented health risks. Despite the possible dangers, no limit was exceeded for pollutants, which confirmed fire brigade reporting.
The extent of the fire site could not be examined until around 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. A total of around 150 emergency services were involved without injuries. Mayor Nino Haase hired himself on site and thanked the firefighters and helpers. Neither the cause of the fire nor the damage to property could originally be quantified, but it was made clear that the warehouse was not an electrical trade, but a company for trade fair construction and marketing products.
The reversal work dragged on until noon, and the city administration will now discuss the ruined legal and financial consequences of the damage. Further information on the circumstances of the fire is expected in the course of the investigation by the police. Such significant incidents once again show the need for a rapid reaction of the emergency services and the importance of security in commercial areas.
