Tower of the Wichernkirche: demolition is imminent!

Gießen, Deutschland - The signs are demolished in Gießen: The church tower of the former Wichernkirche will be removed in the coming days. After the original plans to dismantle the building by hand were considered too risky, the church council has decided with a heavy heart to hire a large excavator. This reported the Gießener Anzeiger . The massive concrete roof of the tower left no other choice because it endangered the safety of the workers if it was broken off from above.

Already on December 12, 2024, the property developer Depant officially confirmed in the Gießener General that the preparatory work on the tower of the Wichernkirche has been running since Monday. The final demolition, which was originally supposed to be completed by December 17, is now affected due to the late delivery of the crane. A transport approval problem prevented the delivery of the heavy device from Hamburg in good time, so that the urgently required approval for a small section of road between Gießen and the Hanseatic city must now be requested.

In 2021 the church was closed for strong roof damage, and the use of the 2300 square meter property has been prohibited since then. The demolition of the church building, which was inaugurated in 1964, was decided in 2022 when the property was sold. The tower, which has become the last rest of the Wichernkirche since then, will also disappear shortly and thus change an iconic silhouette in Gießen.
