Climate protection up close: Heppenheim students build their own measuring stations!
An exciting international project started in Heppenheim! The first workshop of the Erasmus+project "Air_sun+Climate" brought 23 students from the Bergstrasse, Istanbul and Granada district to learn practical knowledge of the climate and the environment. The participants proudly presented their self -made measurement stations to the employees of the Bergstrasse district. This project, which runs until June 30, 2025, is financed by the European Union and aims to promote the interest of young people in environmental issues.
The young people, aged 14 to 17, dealt intensively with the air quality and the influence of humans on the climate. They learned how to build and program SenseBox systems that fine dust, UV radiation and meteorological data can be measured. A highlight was the excursion to the climate arena in Sinsheim and a visit to the observatory in Heppenheim, where they learned more about space weather. These practical experiences are crucial to raise awareness of environmental and climate desks.
innovative technologies in focus
District Administrator Christian Engelhardt emphasized the importance of the project: "Air_sun + Climate" combines climate protection with modern technologies and gives young people the opportunity to actively work on a sustainable future. The measurement data collected during the workshop are publicly provided on the website Opensensemap.org . By the end of the year, the five stations built will be installed at various locations, including the Heppenheim district office and schools in Istanbul and Granada.
The next big event as part of the project is an online workshop on the topic of "Sun: Solar Energy", followed by a one-week workshop in Granada, in which six students from the Bergstrasse district will take part. The places for this workshop are already fully booked. For more information and registration for the upcoming workshops, interested people can contact Jan Fuchs, the head of the Digi_Space.
