College round in Hamburg: IG Metall threatens 24-hour strikes!
A storm of unrest brews over the metal and electrical industry! On Monday, November 10, 2024, the decisive fourth tariff round begins in Hamburg, and IG Metall has already announced new warning strikes in several north German cities. In Hanover, Salzgitter, Hildesheim and Stadthagen, the pressure on employers is further increased after the negotiations have remained unsuccessful in the last three rounds. "It finally needs more substance at the negotiating table," says IG Metall district manager Thorsten Gröger loudly.
warning strikes and impending escalation
IG Metall has plans for 24-hour strikes in the hindquarters if the negotiations fail. In the past few days, over 30,000 employees have participated in the warning strikes, with the "coastal action day" as the previous climax, where around 19,600 workers in Bremen and other cities laid down their work. "A good solution on Monday will only be possible if the money is right," emphasizes Daniel Friedrich, the negotiator of IG Metall coast. The union demands seven percent more wages and 170 euros more for trainees, while employers only provide 3.6 percent.
a fight for fair wages
The negotiations are tense: the employer side speaks of one of the highest offers in the past 20 years, while IG Metall abbots this as "completely inadequate". "We have to be prepared for a bone-hard winter half-year," warns Lower Saxony-Metall boss Volker Schmidt and questions the union's demands. The pressure on employers is growing, and the coming days could be decisive for the future of 3.9 million employees in the industry.
