Tschentscher leads SPD with 97.3 %: Hamburg's future in view!
The Hamburg SPD decided at its latest meeting to move with Mayor Peter Tschentscher to the upcoming citizenship elections. Tschenscher was elected to the top candidate with an overwhelming proportion of 97.3 percent. This happened on Saturday in the Congress Centrum Hamburg (CCH), where a total of 323 of the Social Democrats present voted for him, while only six voted against him and contained three. This decision underlines the support that Tschenscher enjoys within the party.
This election deals with the preparations for the election of citizenship on March 2, 2025, and the process shows how determined the SPD is to further consolidate its leadership. The other top positions in the state list have already been awarded. The critical posts two to four went again to Carola Veit, Dirk Kienscherf and Melanie Leonhard. All three also received over 90 percent of the votes, and there were no opponents. The list was clearly dominated, which helps to strengthen the unity of the party.
Tschenscher and his vision for Hamburg
Tschenscher himself addressed the meeting with a 40-minute application speech in which he presented his vision for the Hanseatic city. He emphasized his intention to continue to act as a mayor in order to promote government transactions in Hamburg. "I want Hamburg to be a good and safe place for all citizens of the city," he said, referring to the numerous crises that Hamburg has mastered in the past. In his speech, he emphasized the successes that the city achieved in different areas, and expressed that there was still a lot to do to keep Hamburg on a stable course.
A central topic of his speech was the presentation of Hamburg as the most family -friendly city in Germany. Tschenscher pointed out various measures that support this, such as free daycare centers, all -day care and the free Germany ticket for students. He also mentioned the increasing results in the PISA study, which was achieved by massive investments in schools.
The political situation in Hamburg
The SPD has been managing Hamburg continuously since 2011, first under the leadership of Olaf Scholz and since 2018 under the direction of Tschenschers. In the previous election of citizenship in 2020, the SPD reached 39.2 percent, while the Greens, which belong to the coalition, received 24.2 percent. The red-green coalition thus has a comfortable two-thirds majority in parliament. The upcoming election in March 2025 is the only one at the state level before the Bundestag election in autumn 2025 and could be crucial for the political landscape of Hamburg.
The mayor also emphasized the reduction of debt and the construction of 100,000 apartments in Hamburg since 2011. Topics such as security and order are of outstanding importance, especially the fight against crime, such as at the main train station.
