Hamburg's elections: merging or separate urns? Exciting debate!
The Hamburgers are facing a possible election revolution! At the end of February and early March, voters could be called twice to the urns. But the voices for merging the elections are getting louder. SPD and Greens first want to wait for a session, while the Social Democrats make clear announcements when asked about their candidate for chancellor.
The Hamburg Senate is open to the debate about a merging of the citizens' and Bundestag election. "We are not hanging on the specified March 2," said the second mayor Katharina Fegebank (Greens) after the Senate meeting. It is important that the principles of the rule of law and fairness remain preserved. On Thursday, the constitutional committee of the citizens will discuss the topic and also listen to the state election manager Oliver Rudolf. If the majority of the MPs come to the conclusion that the election of the election is legally possible for February 23, a reassessment could occur. But Fegebank warns: "Change a long established date is highly risky." Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) has previously spoken out for separate election dates to put the country issues in the foreground.
opposition urges
The opposition vehemently demands that the elections to be combined on February 23 in order to avoid two urns on consecutive weekends. Organizational difficulties and high costs are in space, while the fear grows that the turnout in the election of citizens could decrease after the federal election. The CDU has now also joined the demand for a merger. CDU top candidate Dennis Thering emphasizes that the state election manager also recognized the challenges of two elections in such a short time. "Nobody in Hamburg also understands why you should choose two Sundays in a row," says Thering.
The FDP has again pleaded for a merger in a letter to other party leaders. "Combining the two election dates to February 23 would not only do the turnout, but also bring cost savings and organizational relief," it says. However, a final decision to change the election date can only be made if Chancellor Olaf Scholz asks the question of trust and the Bundestag is dissolved. Meanwhile, the SPD Hamburg remains firmly with Olaf Scholz as Chancellor and Chancellor candidate.
