Refurbishment of Herbertstraße: Historical goals become a museum!

A historical change in Hamburg's notorious Herbertstraße! For more than 90 years, the gates, once built by the National Socialists, were a symbol of delimitation. Now they are faced with a fundamental renewal!

On Monday morning the gate on the east side, the access to Davidstrasse, was dismantled. A provisional privacy screen was set up, while the torn gate is transferred to the Museum of Hamburg History as a valuable piece of city history. The new gates are to be installed by Friday, which increases the anticipation for the changes in this controversial place.

a monument to the past

The privacy systems that were set up in 1933 are listed and are reminiscent of the persecution of sex workers who were then stigmatized as "female anti-social elements". A memorial stone that has been reminiscent of the suffering of these women since August increases the importance of Herbertstraße as a place of memory.

During the construction work, access on Davidstrasse remains closed until November 8, as extensive fundamental work is carried out. The privacy screen on the west side, access Gerhardstraße, will be preserved as a monument and is to be restored later. The need for this work is obvious, because the condition of the gates is severely impaired by years of use and environmental influences.
