Foliage high season in Hamburg: City cleaning is now required!
Hamburg, Deutschland - leaves where the eye looks! In Hamburg, the citizens experience a real autumn flood of leaves that cover the streets and paths. City cleaning faces enormous challenges, because the cleanup has started - and even a few days earlier than in previous years! Spokeswoman Anna-Maria Jeske confirms: "The leaf season started in mid-September."
annually, the city cleaning employees collect up to 20,000 tons of leaves, enough to fill 400,000 conventional garbage cans! If you put these tons in a row, that would reach from Hamburg to Osnabrück. In this high season, a proud 350 vehicles are used, which not only clean the streets and sidewalks, but also free the 230 km long cycle path network twice a week from the slippery leaves. The safety of pedestrians and cyclists has top priority!
climate -neutral goal by 2035
Another exciting point: The Hamburg city cleaning has set the ambitious goal of becoming climate -neutral by 2035! This purpose is the complete switch to electric leaf blades in recent years. Jeske emphasizes that some sweepers have already been converted. While these steps are already going in the right direction, the challenge of the large vehicles remains where there is currently a lack of alternative drives. "It will certainly take some time before we can completely change there," she explains.
For Hamburg private households there are practical solutions for tuning disposal: You can hand over the foliage to the twelve recycling yards of the city or conveniently in leaf bags that are available in numerous places. A clean solution for the many leaves that the city brings with it!
