Hamburg's courier project: combined mobility for a green future!

In a groundbreaking attempt in Hamburg, the environmentally friendly combination of on-demand mobility and courier services was tested from the end of March to the end of May under the EU project Move21. On 44 working days, couriers made free deliveries from donations in kind and clothing to needy recipients, while at the same time carrying out real and simulated tours. Over 15,000 virtual stops were used in the Moia service area.

With a total of 153 tours carried out, 23 real deliveries, it was found that the simultaneous transport of people and goods can be realized. The couriers moved on foot, supported by parcel scrolls and wearing bags, and used the innovative "Box - The Smart City pick -up station" to be intermediate in the event of a failed delivery. The results of this mobility attempt show concrete possibilities to use resources more efficiently and to significantly reduce traffic loads.

optimization required for long -term operation

Despite the positive approaches, there is a clear need for optimization in order to be able to implement such a concept permanently. These findings were recorded in the final report of the project. Liv Assmann, State Councilor for Hamburg, emphasizes the need for European cooperation for innovations to cope with the climate crisis. Jan Kruska from the Smart City sees the new open package stations as the key to efficient logistical transition points that are supposed to relieve traffic.

Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economic Affairs and Innovation, emphasizes the importance of redesigning logistics on the last mile. Emission -free vehicles and commercial cargo bikes are to be combined in order to reduce the traffic load. Stefanie von Berg, district manager Altona, also underlines the positive knowledge of this test as the basis for future developments in order to actively shape a sustainable mobility transition.
