Hamburg launches Europe’s first autonomous bus network – the future of mobility!

From the middle of next year, Hamburg will be the scene of a revolutionary transport development! The city will be the first in Europe to launch 20 autonomous minibuses. The traffic authority and the Hochbahn have now defined the test area, which extends from the Elbe to the city park and includes the districts of Schlump and Wandsbek. An exciting step into the future, which is supported by the federal government with 26 million euros! Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks (Greens) announced: "We'll start between the city park and the Elbe, between Schlump and Wandsbek. So in downtown Hamburg and where things are most complicated for vehicles."

Around 300,000 people live in this 37 square kilometer test area and will soon have to get used to the futuristic minibuses. To ensure the safety of passengers, safety drivers will initially be on board. Tjarks emphasizes: “It is very important to us that the issue of safety comes first.” The first trips will initially only take place with selected test users. The vehicles of MOIA and the elevated railway, including four-seaters and Holon minibuses for up to 15 people, are intended to prove that they are more attentive than humans.

A look into the future of local transport

Hamburg has big plans! By 2030, thousands of these autonomous vehicles are expected to be used in local transport. The Hanseatic city wants to encourage drivers to voluntarily get rid of their cars and offers an attractive alternative with driverless minibuses. Federal Transport Minister Wissing (FDP) recently presented a symbolic check to Hochbahn, Moia and the bus manufacturer Holon to support this innovative step. The future of transport in Hamburg has begun – and it is autonomous!
