Successful sustainability conference in Hamburg: set a new sign!

In Hamburg the first international sustainability conference, the Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC), recently took place. This event, which was organized in cooperation with the UN Development Program (UNDP), attracted up to 1,600 participants from more than 100 countries, including prominent heads of state and government. The head of the UNDP, Achim Steiner, expressed a positive statement on this occasion and described the conference as a success, especially in view of the challenges with which the world is currently confronted, such as crises and conflicts.

Steiner emphasized the importance of this conference in the current global situation. 'The fact that we were able to set up such a format in less than a year is already a performance,' he said. According to Steiner, it is crucial that not only people come together, but that the conference produces concrete results, even if it did not name any specific results.

background to the sustainability goals

A central concern of the HSC is to promote the UN sustainability goals (SDGS), which were first decided in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly. These 17 goals strive to cope with essential global challenges such as hunger, poverty, access to education and sustainable use of resources by 2030. However, current data show that these goals are often missed, which underlines the urgency of the conference.

In this context, Steiner found that despite the current interest from the economy and the broad international participation, the actual success of the conference in the future must be measured. The conference sees itself as a 'counter -mark on the current crises and is intended to help promote cooperation between the countries in order to master the global challenges together.

The first HSC thus delivers the platform to bring different players together and intensify the dialogue about sustainable developments. It remains to be seen which specific measures will result from this important meeting. Despite the positive assessments, the way to achieve the ambitious SDGs is still paved with many challenges. The answers to these questions will be decisive in the coming months and years, while the world continues to urge effective solutions to tackle the pressing problems
