Boris Herrmann fights at the Vendée Globe: gap and disappointment!
The Vendée Globe is a race against wind and weather, and for the Hamburg sailing star Boris Herrmann it has been going around! The Malizia skipper fights against the elements and its own disappointment. On Tuesday evening, at 7 p.m., Herrmann found himself on a disappointing 17th place, with a deficit of over 248 nautical miles (approx. 460 kilometers) on the leading Sam Goodchild on board the vulnerable.
"I am a little sad that I have lost so many miles and don't look as if I would catch up again. The start of this Vendée Globe is mentally not so easy," says Herrmann, who does not want to be able to get it down despite the adverse circumstances. "It is part of the game not to go crazy," he added. A suboptimal course and technical problems in light wind have made life difficult for him in the past few days.
"Have made progress in mindset"
Despite the challenges, Herrmann remains optimistic. "It is important not to be pulled down," emphasizes the 43-year-old. He has made progress in the mindset and feels in harmony with his boat. "There are still 10 to 20 percent sadness due to the sporting situation. But 80 percent are good," he explains. While the competition is progressing on tight south course, Herrmann hopes that the strengths of his boat will come into play in the harsh conditions of the South Pole Arctic Ocean.
The regatta over 45,000 kilometers is still long, and Herrmann remembers his Vendée premiere four years ago when he even left 280 nautical miles at the same time and yet had a winning chances until shortly before the finish. "I have no problem with the motivation. There is only one way - forward," he calls determined while he is preparing for the upcoming challenges.
