Modernization of the Hamburg-Berlin: Large construction site from August 2025!
Hamburg, Deutschland - Epoch Times 18. November 2024
Deutsche Bahn (DB) has awarded the construction orders for the comprehensive renovation of the highly frequented railway line between Hamburg and Berlin! Despite growing doubts about the schedule, the DB remains optimistic and plans to start the work in August 2025. The orders concern the sections between Berlin-Spandau and Nauen as well as between the nauen and Büchen. Four companies, including the construction group Bau, have been awarded the contract. The last section between Büchen and Hamburg is expected to be awarded in April 2025 without this having to influence the overall time plan.
massive construction work and closure of the route
The railway has big plans: During the construction work, which should last until April 2026, the entire route between Hamburg and Berlin is blocked! This means that goods and passenger traffic must be redirected. A total of 181 kilometers of tracks, over 200 course and around 70 kilometers of overhead lines are on the list of renovations. In addition, the route between Berlin and Nauen and between Hamburg and Büchen is equipped with the modern digital train protection system ETCS. The section between Büchen and Nauen will only be upgraded from 2030.
These renovation measures are part of a large -scale program of Deutsche Bahn, which aims to modernize more than 40 heavily frequented routes in the coming years. Around 30,000 passengers use this important corridor every day. But the uncertainty remains: the financing for many routes is still pending because the supplementary budget has not been adopted. However, Christoph Ploß from the Union in the Transport Committee assured that the all-round renovation between Hamburg and Berlin will continue to be financially supported. "It is good that the reigning government and the Union are pulling together in the general renovation of Berlin-Hamburg," said Dirk Flege from Allianz Pro Schiene.
