Habeck wants to tame social media: dispute over freedom of expression!
Robert Habeck, the Minister of Economics and Designed Chancellor candidate of the Greens, caused a sensation after his appearance at the party congress. In an inspiring speech, he called for a stronger regulation of social media, heated by the widespread disinformation around the Greens party conference. "If everyone only reports on exciting debates, it will be moderately successful," said Habeck. He emphasized that "fire" would achieve a greater effect in the discussions - this urge to create heated headlines is "no natural law".
Habeck made it clear that freedom of expression in the general public is often confused with statements that do not cover this freedom. "Freedom of expression is a high asset, the heart of democracy," he said, emphasizing its importance in the virtual world. At the same time, he warned that social media should not be programmed so that they restrict freedom. These new program interventions are to be supported by the Digital Services Act (DSA) of the European Commission, whereby the Federal Network Agency takes over the national implementation.
ending with hate on the net!
One of the sharpest statements by Habeck aimed at the need to make algorithms transparent and prevent manipulation. "Freedom of expression only applies within the rules of decency and democracy that we have given," he said passionately. In particular, he condemned hatred, misogyny and racism on the Internet and emphasized that their fighting had nothing to do with censorship, but should be understood as protection of freedom of expression.
With the Digital Services Act as a means of pressure, Habeck expects effective control over social media in Germany. The Federal Network Agency will act as a regulator to ensure that the algorithms neither distort the diversity of expression nor allow discriminatory content. The minister's views aim at a digital environment that protects democracy and promotes respect on the Internet.
