Glass fiber expansion in Austria: the way to a green future!

Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - The Open Fiber Austria Association (OFAA), which includes over 200 Austrian telecommunications companies, is strong for the comprehensive expansion of fiber optic networks as a decisive infrastructure for the domestic economy. A current study, commissioned by Rundfunk and Telekom Regulation Authority (RTR), shows that fiber optic technologies are not only more environmentally friendly, but also up to ten times more energy-efficient than traditional copper and mobile phone technologies. According to the research of the German Advice Institute Wik-Consult, a faster introduction of FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) could significantly improve to reduce energy consumption and the CO₂ balance of Austria, such as Telekom.com reported.

glass fiber as a key technology

Especially in an age in which high data volume are becoming increasingly important, the glass fiber is proven than the future -proof network option. The OFAA President Dr. Igor Brusic emphasizes: "For sustainability reasons, the in-house cabling is urgently necessary-the earlier we change, the more future-proof we make Austria." At the moment, 2.5 out of 4.2 million households in Austria have no access to fiber optic networks, which resets the country in a European comparison. The OFAA therefore calls for a short -term and comprehensive expansion to meet the need for fast internet throughout Austria.

At the same time, a study by EY on behalf of Telekom shows that fiber optic expansion in Germany will gain trip and will significantly increase the demand for faster internet in the coming years. By 2025, half of the households in Germany could have access to fiber optic, with Telekom playing a central role. It now supplies over 10 million households with glass fiber, which represents an increase in the proportion of supplied FTTH households, such as ots.at reported. The study also emphasizes that the ecological advantages of fiber optics with regard to energy consumption and CO₂ emissions are not to be neglected, which offers a further incentive for expansion.
