Women in the lead: Where is equality in Austria?
The management positions in Austria's largest companies remain very male -dominated in 2025. According to the new report by Arbeiterkammer.at , the proportion of women in the board comes to frightening 13.8 percent. The image shows itself even darker among the listed companies: Here are only 28 women under 218 board members, which means a measurement of 12.8 percent. Simone Hudelist, AK Vienna study author, criticizes: "Ten of the 69 listed companies are male in both committees". This represents a serious deficit compared to Germany, where the proportion of women in DAX companies is already 25.7 percent.
New law and existing need for action
A new law now provides for a binding women's quota for board members of listed companies: at least one woman must be represented for board members with more than two members. According to the Hudelist, this is a positive step, but the question remains whether these measures are sufficient to promote equality, especially since companies with over 1,000 employees are not affected by this regulation.
