Exotic fruits conquer Flachgau: agriculture in change!

in Wals-Siezenheim, in Flachgau, the farmers are taking a course on an exciting new chapter in agriculture! As the ORF Salzburg reports, exotic plants such as ginger, melons and physalis thrive in the fields. This trend is not only interesting, but also shows how climate change changes agricultural practice. The demand for these unusual products is booming, and customers are surprised and pleased with the fresh offer. According to the farmers' statements, however, this does not affect the demand for traditional fruit and vegetable varieties- these remain in demand.

a new era of growing

A look at Germany shows how arable farming is designed in this country. Around 60 percent of the arable land is used for the cultivation of wheat, corn and barley, whereby wheat represents the main culture. This is grown on about a quarter of the total arable area, while the area for fruit is about forty times smaller, such as the Federal Information Center Agriculture . The increase in the rapeseed area, which increased by almost nine percent compared to the previous year, is particularly interesting. In contrast, rye lost to the area and shrank by about seven percent.

The changes in agriculture are significant, and with the prospect of large viticulture in the region around Salzburg, a new era of cultivation could be heralded. So far there is only one vineyard in the urban area, but the future promises exciting opportunities for local agricultural economy.
