Archbishop Marx: Extended recovery after arm injury - new appointments in view!

München, Deutschland - Munich, March 17, 2025 - Cardinal Reinhard Marx, the Archbishop of Munich and Freising, has to go into rehabilitation after a serious arm injury. According to an explanation of his spokesman, Marx will be longer than originally planned, and all public appearances until March 29 were canceled. The injury was already known on March 5, and an operation was necessary, which led to the cancellation of further appointments, as the Catholic news agency reported. Already last year, Marx had to pause for several weeks due to a broken arm.

Details on the injury and previous career

Marx, who was born in Geseke in 1953 and had an impressive career in the Catholic Church, was not only a bishop of Trier and since 2007 as an archbishop of Munich and Freising, but was also charged in 2010. His injury is not only a personal setback, but also has an impact on the planning of the Archdiocese of Munich, which has to cope with important public tasks without him. The complete recovery process is now being followed exactly, while the archdiocese is preparing for the cardinal's recovery soon, which the faithful in the region will hope to be able to take part in his events again soon, as he did two years ago, when he directed the medical staff for his recovery.

These health challenges come at a time when Marx plays an important role in the Catholic Church in Germany, including as a former chairman of the Justitia et Pax of the German Bishops' Conference. His previous experiences and the challenges he mastered could also benefit him in this difficult phase, as the Archdiocese of Munich makes clear.
