E-bill 2025: Companies face major challenges!

The digitization of invoicing in Germany is picking up: From January 1, 2025, all companies in Germany must be able to receive and process electronic invoices (e-bills). This is the result of a decision by the Council of the European Union, which has decided to implement the commission proposal to modernize the VAT system (VIDA). This means that in the future only e-bills will be accepted in a structured, electronic format, as reported editel.at . This includes the formats x calculation and Zugferd, which must be created in accordance with the European standards.

The changeover should not only ensure legal conformity, but also offers significant advantages for companies. Costs for paper, pressure and postage are eliminated, and the processing times are significantly shortened by automated validation. Gerd Marlovits, Managing Director of Editel Austria, emphasizes that the new international e-invoicing competence center supports companies in order to implement these digital solutions efficiently. "A structured e-bill is only the tip of the iceberg under which there is a variety of processes," explains Marlovits. The EU study shows that a switch to e-bills in Europe can enable savings of 41 billion euros within ten years.

important deadlines and requirements

companies have to prepare for the new requirements: From January 1, 2027, those companies that generate more than 800,000 euros in annual sales are also obliged to send e-bills. From January 1, 2028, this obligation applies to all companies, while PDF documents are no longer accepted. "The steps for implementation must now be initiated," suggests Tomasz Kuciel, head of the e-invoicing competence center at Editel, in order to meet the legal requirements and to ensure a smooth transition.
Via the central data inspection exit from Editel, companies can have a comprehensive access to all e-billing standards Connect the peppol network. This makes Editel an important connection for companies in order to adapt to the new challenges of digital invoicing, as well as ots.at explained in detail.
