E-invoicing 2025: Companies face major challenges!

The digitalization of invoicing in Germany is gaining momentum: From January 1, 2025, all companies in Germany must be able to receive and process electronic invoices (e-invoices). This is the result of a decision by the Council of the European Union, which decided to implement the Commission's proposal to modernize the VAT system (ViDA). This means that in the future only e-invoices will be accepted in a structured, electronic format, such as editel.at reported. These include the XRechnung and ZUGFeRD formats, which must be created in accordance with European standards.

The change is not only intended to ensure legal compliance, but also offers significant advantages for companies. This eliminates costs for paper, printing and postage, and processing times are significantly shortened through automated validation. Gerd Marlovits, Managing Director of EDITEL Austria, emphasizes that the new international e-invoicing competence center will support companies in implementing these digital solutions efficiently. “A structured e-invoice is just the tip of the iceberg, under which a multitude of processes lie,” explains Marlovits. The EU study shows that a switch to e-invoices in Europe could save €41 billion within ten years.

Important deadlines and requirements

Companies must prepare for the new requirements: From January 1, 2027, companies that generate more than 800,000 euros in annual sales will also be obliged to send e-invoices. From January 1, 2028, this obligation applies to all companies, while PDF receipts will no longer be accepted. “The implementation steps must be taken now,” suggests Tomasz Kuciel, Head of the e-Invoicing Competence Center at EDITEL, in order to meet legal requirements and ensure a smooth transition.
Via EDITEL's central data hub eXite, companies can gain comprehensive access to all e-invoicing standards and connect to the European PEPPOL network. EDITEL thus creates an important connection for companies to adapt to the new challenges of digital invoicing ots.at explained in detail.
