Dodik in Moscow: immersion or strategic visit?
Moskau, Russland - The Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik announced today that he arrived in Moscow on Monday. This was announced in a video that was recorded in front of the tomb of the unknown soldier in the Russian capital. In this short speech, Dodik praised Russian President Vladimir Putin without giving any details about a possible meeting. However, the circumstances of his stay in Russia are tense because the Bosnian State Court has issued an international arrest warrant against him.
The public prosecutor had ordered the arrest of Dodik a few days earlier. He and the President of the Republica Srpska, Nenad Stevandic, are suspected of having misused their political offices in order to avoid border controls and travel abroad. These developments are in the context of a restless political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has been divided between Republika Srpska and the Croatian-Muslim Federation since the Peace Agreement of Dayton from 1995.political tensions and rippling deserts
Milorad Dodik, who is now official as President of the Republica Srpska, is aiming for a split off Bosnia and Herzegovina. The region is a multi-ethnic state in which Bosnian Serbs and the Federation mainly live in the Republika Srpska. In the past, Dodik denied the genocide of Srebrenica, in which over 8,000 boys and men were murdered in 1995, and is described as authoritarian and corrupt. Transparency International has repeatedly pointed out that Dodik has the Republika Srpska like a family company.
dodik was condemned for unconstitutional laws that were to override the decisions of the overall Bosnian Constitutional Court and the instructions of the high representative of the UN. He received a prison sentence of one year and a seven -year ban on officials, the legacy of which is still pending. In response to a previous court ruling, which condemned him for disregarding the high representative, Dodik had one -sidedly explained the jurisdiction of the central judiciary and police for the Republika SRPSKA, which led to a further escalation of the tensions.
international reactions
Christian Schmidt, the high representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has expressed clear intentions to prevent the split off. Under Schmidt’s management, the international community, including the EU mission Eufor Althea, has announced a “temporary reinforcement” of the troops in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Germany has intensified its military presence in the region since 2022 and will increase the number of international soldiers to around 1,500.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has been announced in Sarajevo for March 10, 2025 and will deal with the current developments in the region. Schmidt himself has expressed self -criticism about the lack of attention of international partners regarding the political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The complexity of the situation remains a challenge, while Dodik appears in Moscow and pursues his political ambitions.
