Chaos at the post in Mettmann: Citizens fight against long queues!
in Mettmann, a city with almost 40,000 inhabitants, residents report considerable problems with the post office. In a letter to the editor, Gisela Bendt expresses that postage has been increased for Deutsche Post's services since January 1, 2025. The situation for the citizens has deteriorated in the past few months, which led to long waiting times and incomprehensible processes, especially during the Christmas season.
The only acceptance point in the city center closes due to lack of staff and is currently only open for half a day. For many Mettmann, especially for older people, access to the acceptance points that are outside the city center is cumbersome. Problems with the purchase of stamps are also recorded because local dealers are not supplied directly from the post office. In addition, registered mail must be abandoned in Metzkausen, which further complicates the situation.
growing challenges for residents
Another challenge is the use of package compartments that is problematic for many older people because many do not have a cell phone. Public transport is also an obstacle for this population group because it is cumbersome. Gisela Bendt calls for a prompt solution for the Postservices in Mettmann in order to meet the needs of citizens.
The Deutsche Post itself adapted the fees for the basic product "Letter National" on January 1, 2025, as reported. This price adjustment was necessary due to higher wage, transport and energy costs as well as inflation and falling letter. The prices for registered mail remain unchanged. Despite these adjustments, Deutsche Post assures that it will also deliver letters throughout Germany in 2025 on six days a week. Standard letters are usually delivered on the working day after delivery, while important letter shipments will arrive on the next working day.
