Snow catastrophe in the Balkans: 127,000 households without electricity!
Drvar, Bosnien und Herzegowina - A winter storm has transformed the Balkan states into a nightmare! Violent snowfalls and icy winds not only blocked the streets, but also left tens of thousands of households in Bosnia and Herzegovina without electricity. The location is dramatic!
The electrocrivreda BIH, the electricity supplier in Bosnia, reported on Tuesday that the situation has deteriorated: "Currently, 127,000 points are without electricity." The violent snowfall also caused traffic chaos in Croatia and Serbia. In the Republika Srpska, the Serbian part of Bosnia, around 50,000 households are affected by power outages. emergency in drvar
The emergency was proclaimed in the west of Bosnia! The city of Drvar is cut off from the outside world, its 17,000 inhabitants are stuck. "The situation is extremely difficult. The snow falls incessantly. People are stranded in the snow," reports Jasna Pecanac, the President of the DRVAR municipal council.
The snow drifts reach in some villages by down to two meters! The clean -up work is extremely challenging. "We ask for support for snow rooms. All available machines are already in use," continues Pecanac.
chaos on the streets and in the schools
The authorities in the region have published travel warnings, while the snow drifts have closed some main traffic routes. Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia have banned the movement of heavy vehicles and severely restricted traffic on affected roads. In Banja Luka, the second largest city of Bosnia, school lessons in primary schools were canceled due to the snow. The classes were also suspended the day before in around 70 schools in the UNA-SANA canton in northwestern Bosnia.
The rail connections in parts of Bosnia are also quiet! The state electricity company describes the situation in some areas as "extremely hard". The heavy, wet snow masses have brought the distribution lines to collapse, which made it difficult to access the affected areas.
During the night, dozens of vehicles in West Bosnia were held in the snow for up to 10 hours before they could continue. In Slovenia, the search for an injured Hungarian hiker in the Alps was discontinued due to strong winds. However, his companion could be brought to safety.
In Croatia, a mountain rescue team reached a man with skis early on Tuesday who stuck in his car while he was on the way to a dialysis. "We brought him there in time," said Savior Dario Cindric.
The Balkan states face a huge challenge, while winter extends its icy claws and turns people upside down!
