Germany is getting green: Renewable energies on record course!
The energy transition in Germany is taking pleasant progress, the current development shows that the production of electricity from renewable sources is on a remarkable high flight. In the first nine months of this year, a total of around 217 terawatt hours were provided by wind, sun, water and biomass, which corresponds to an increase of nine percent compared to the previous year. This positive news was recently published by the Working Group on Renewable Energy Statistics (AGEE-STAT) and confirmed by Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck. He emphasized: "We are on course."
What exactly is behind this climb? The explanation is complex. The Federal Government has simplified and accelerated the approval procedures for new facilities in the past two years. These changes now have positive effects on the expansion of renewables. In the third quarter of 2024 there was again an increase in the granting of permits, which ensures a significant increase in capacity.
main driver of renewable
The area of photovoltaics should be particularly emphasized. Despite sometimes less favorable weather conditions, an increase of 14 percent has been observed, which has been due to the increased installations in the past few months. In return, electricity production from wind energy, both on land and at sea, increased by a total of ten percent. Here, cheaper weather conditions have turned out to be positive and contributed to the addition of new capacities. Together, wind and photovoltaic systems contribute more than three quarters to the total share of renewable energies.Hydropower has also benefited: thanks to a higher amount of precipitation compared to the previous year, an increase in energy generation was recorded by twelve percent. However, the generation of electricity from biomass remained constantly compared to the previous year.
internationally important role
at the international level, Habeck emphasizes that Germany as the third largest industrial country in the world now covers more than half of its electricity requirements from renewable energy sources. According to him, this is a considerable step and shows the clear will of the country to take on a leading role in the field of renewable energies. A terawatt corresponds to 1,000 gigawatts - sufficient to supply around 700,000 average households. For comparison: a German nuclear power plant has an output of about a gigawatts.
These successes in the energy transition are not only a reason for joy for Germany, but also a signal to international partners that the way to sustainable energy supply is taken seriously. The progress shows that increased efforts and political decisions in the area of renewable energies not only protect the climate, but also create new economic structures.
