World kids press fresh apple juice: a pleasure from the region!
In an exciting project, the children of the natural and environmental group "Weltkids" of the biological station in Osterholz-Scharmbeck learned in a very practical way how to make fresh apple juice. The group, which has been met regularly for over two years, had the opportunity to create a whole tub full of delicious juice with self -collected apples. This campaign took place as part of the city's neighborhood work and in cooperation with the House of Cultures.
The "World Kids" that have set themselves the task of playing out the topics of nature and the environment in a playful way went to the orchard of the mill on Lindenstrasse to collect apples. They were supported by Lukas and Mia, two FSJ people who spend their voluntary social year in the biological station. These young helpers first washed the collected apples thoroughly and then prepared for the pressing.
a practical workshop for little explorers
Equipped with some kitchen utensils, the children who are at the age of five to 13 were able to roughly shred the collected apples. The pedagogical approach was not only instructive, but also entertaining. During the shredding, one or the other apple pieces landed in the mouth of the small kitchen cutters when cutting. After the apples were roughly prepared, it went to the fine cutting, which was done with a chopper that had to be operated with muscle strength. It was a competition between the strongest boys, everyone wanted to show how strong they are.
After everything was well prepared, the crushed apples were placed in the juice press. The children fascinated how the golden juice flowed from the press into the collecting container. The result was the delicious reward for hard work, and of course it was tasted immediately. A refreshing experience that was both instructive and entertaining.
The group "Weltkids" is part of a larger initiative that aims to improve the living and living environment of the children and adolescents in their quarters by actively involved in various environmental protection projects. By planting trees or cleaning the surroundings, the children are not only active in nature, but also learn a lot about the respectful use of the environment.
